You’re not alone! Getting a book published is a popular dream. But most people let the dream die because they’re not sure how to get started or what’s involved. How do you go from dream to published book? Do you need a book proposal? What goes in a book proposal anyway? What if I don’t have any writing credentials? Should you write the whole manuscript first? How do you get an agent? How much of an advance would I get? Can you make a living writing books...?
These are just some of the many questions that people ask me when they find out I’m a writer and book proposal consultant. On this website, you will find many of the answers. I share the advice and information that has helped me personally sell four book proposals and has helped others get agents and sell their work too. There is no exact science to book proposal writing. I’ve seen many variations. You have to know the basics and then figure out what works for you.
The information provided here is intended for adult non-fiction books, as in self-help/inspiration, cookbooks, how-to and memoir. I have never written a children’s book and therefore I can’t give advice specific to that area of book publishing though you may glean some information here that will be helpful.
I work with individuals to get them from the dreaming stage to the doing stage. I am a coach and a critic. I help you with positioning, clarifying your ideas down and getting them down on paper.
You absolutely need to be a dreamer. You need to believe in yourself even when the odds are stacked against you. Trying to sell a book proposal—even when you know what you’re doing—is risky. You’re putting yourself and your ideas out there. You’re risking rejection (and chances are, you will be rejected before you’re accepted.) But why not give it a try! We’re only here once and so many spend our days working at jobs we like but don’t love. Writing a book is fun, challenging, meaningful and best of all, a vehicle through which you can express yourself, help others and inspire.
Many people secretly believe they have something to say and share. The sad thing is that they do have something to say and share but they don’t do anything about it. I passionately believe that if you take the steps to learn how to write a book proposal and if you believe in yourself, you can get a book published. It may take a while, you may have to reformulate and re-strategize, but you can do it if you stick with it.
